Arthur Townend, M.S., has six years of archaeological experience in both the academia and private sectors. Mr. Townend has spent much of his career as an Archaeological Field Technician and is currently an Archaeological Crew Chief at TerraXplorations. In this current role at TerraXplorations, Mr. Townend assists in leading archaeological field crews in Florida. He has participated in archaeological projects across the eastern United States as well as abroad in both Germany and Israel. Prior to joining TerraXplorations, Mr. Townend started his archaeological journey as a study abroad participant through the University of North Carolina at Charlotte at the academic site of Mount Zion in Jerusalem in 2018. After graduating from UNCC with a bachelor’s in Anthropology and History in 2019, he returned to Mt. Zion for the 2019 summer season as the field draftsman. Mr. Townend began his Master’s degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2021, participating in the excavation of the historical village of Newport in Pennsylvania as a field school participant. He gained experience in lithic analysis and GPR data analysis during his Master’s education as well as experience as a TA in Germany, where he helped guide field school participants through the excavation of a US World War II bomber. Mr. Townend’s thesis focused on the industrial site of Barree Forge, where he performed a GPR survey and analyzed historical domestic material culture found during excavation. His experience outside of IUP includes working as an Archaeological Field Technician for New South Associates in Virginia and Environmental Design & Research in New York.
